The first line the first issue is "no rain." As far as I'm concerned it doesn't rain in Gotham anymore. It can rain in everybody else's book, not in mine. There's plenty of rainy Gotham out there. But part of it was I wanted to write a thing for my kids, I want to write a thing that my kids could read. -- Matt Fraction

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

In the latest episode of the world's least amusing sitcom, the US Attorney for Washington, Jeanine Pirro withdrew criminal charges relating to the "Vandalism" of the Reflecting Pool, admitting it was down to a crap repair job. POTUS 47 however, continued to claim that it WAS vandalism because you know how much he dislikes it when little things like "facts" disagree with his worldview.

I finally caught "Masters of the Universe", and I wanted to like it so much more than I did, because they seem to want to undercut the drama at every moment and they undercut it with some winceworthy comedy (The "Taika Waititi Effect" as I like to call it). That and the fact that Eternians seem so keen to be a bunch of dicks to Adam (who doesn't do much to help himself at times, but who is basically someone cast out into a dimensional vortex all by himself when he was ten and had to exist in a world that's completely unlike his won, and being glared at a lot for having accidentally lost the thing everyone was obsessed with BECAUSE HE WAS TEN YEARS OLD and in a damned DIMENSIONAL VORTEX). Most of the cast do their best, but it's so frustrating because there's a much more interesting movie just under the surface of the one we got.

Batman Caped Crusader season 2 dropped, but I'll make a separate discussion thread for that.

Issue #138'd ended on Dick confessing to his self-appointed prosecutor.

She believed he was fully responsible for the recent pileup on Blüdhaven's new superhighway - he knew that he shared the responsibility with " the witch of Blüdhaven. "

He told her about that ghost. She went on TV to tell everyone about how she didn't believe him.

Wow, there's a lot of good stuff here, so much to pick from. We get Hawk-Girl and Catwoman tussling over an ancient Egyptian amulet, Psycho-Pirate messing with Bunker, Grace Choi and Thunder, the Robins playing volleyball, Connor Kent and a shirtless doppelganger, a stupidsexyDarkseid, freaking GIGANTA messing with Mister Miracle...

No, let's go with the story that features both the least amount of worn swimwear but also is most centred around the subject.

Deadline is reporting that Emma Frost has been cast in the upcoming MCU X-Men film. She's a great actress with a lot of range so it should be interesting to see what she brings to the role. Looks like we'll be getting more casting soon...

It's rare that we get villains who are so completely evil in that very old-school way. From one angle, Knull's very 90s, in a good way - that big, bold energy that comics were running on like rocket fuel at the time - but from another, he's got that 60s villain energy in that there's no dealing with him, no humanizing him. It's time he came back and did his thing again. -- Al Ewing

Thor the Mighty Avenger 4

From the depths of yesteryear comes Thor the Mighty Avenger, an out-of-continuity tie-in to the first Thor movie so good, it was canceled almost immediately (despite the art of now-famous artist Chris Samnee). Despite never finishing off its story arc, it's still a grand time.

The premise is that in a "young" Marvel Universe--with early versions of Iron Man, Ant-Man, Namor, and other OGs in the mix--Thor comes to Earth as an amnesiac, being taught humility by Odin for a crime he can't remember committing. Jane Foster, here an archaeologist working at the local university, takes him in as he struggles to remember his past, adapt to Earth's peculiarities, and fight any supervillains that show up.

It's episodic, with every issue covering the growing relationship between Thor and Jane as well as guest stars and a freak of the week. And it all ends up being very, well, wholesome, with Thor tending to befriend his fellow superheroes, save the day, and get a little closer to Jane in the process. The villains are never too bad and the heroes are never too flawed. It's a nice throwback to the days when superheroes worried more about helping people than how to send each other to super-prison. And, of course, it's a joy to see Samnee reimagine every character in "sixties yet modern" costumes.

It's a crying shame that the comic didn't run a lot longer--the concept art shows the Hulk was coming up--but as is, it's still a darn good time at the comic shop. Here's a short sequence from issue four, where Thor goes drinking with the visiting Warriors Three and ends up making friends with Captain Britain.

Though in true Marvel fashion, 'making friends' involves a lot more power bombs than it does in our universe.

Don't worry about it, I saw how Brian treated Meggan in Excalibur. He has it coming. )

Looking through old issues in the wake of that discussion about Jubilee. AFter being annoyed by Tall Wolverine on this cover, I realised that I think this is the best X-Men logo. A nice, big 'X', stark font for the 'men' and an abstract atom behind. Beautiful in its simplicity.

Just one panel from the pages within, not actually featuring Jubilee; the X-Men do have a certain outlet available to them when frustrated...
